Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Hernando County (RSVP)
RSVP is a program of Senior Corps, administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities. RSVP is sponsored by Mid Florida Community Services, Inc., and funded in part by the United Way of Hernando County.
RSVP volunteers have the opportunity to gain or enhance their skills, make new friends, participate in recognition events, receive newsletters as well as supplemental accident and liability insurance.
Current Volunteer Opportunities:
Brooksville Garden Club- Gardner’s clean and improve trails and parks owned/maintained by county or city governments; collect and distribute food through a "Back Pack" program; teach conservation and environmental classes to K-8 students at a summer nature camp.
Catholic Charities – Mentors work with those facing the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy and/or parenting. Respite care workers provide center-based care for those with Alzheimer’s and other memory loss illnesses.
Family Visitation – Volunteers supervise court-ordered family visitation to ensure the safety and welfare of children.
Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission – Chinsegut Nature Center and Brooksville Ridge Region –Volunteers clean and improve trails and parks owned/maintained by county or city governments.
Habitat for Humanity- New home construction and selection team members who mentor and choose qualified applicants for homes. Sort, display and sell donated items in thrift store.
HEART Literacy- Tutor students in adult education classes including GED and ESOL.
Hernando County Public Schools- Tutor elementary school students in math, English and reading, and read books to kindergartners.
Hernando County Veteran's Services - Clerical.
Hernando Youth Orchestra – Mentor youth in an orchestral setting.
Library East, West and Spring Hill – Librarian Aide; reading programs for children.
Mid Florida Community Services Congregate Dining - senior activities; set table, serve meals and clean-up.
Mid Florida Community Services – Meals on Wheels deliveries and/or telephone reassurance calls to homebound seniors.
Spring Hill Garden Club- Maintenance of public gardens and waterfall.
The Life Center of Hernando- Mentors and "Baby Grannies" for young mothers; life skills educators for those who are facing an unplanned pregnancy and/or parenting.
Volunteer Tax Assistance Program (VITA) - Provide free tax preparation for low and moderate-income taxpayers at no cost. Volunteers do not need previous experience. Specialized training is provided by the IRS. Volunteers generally serve 4 hours per week from mid-January – April.
We value the contributions our volunteers make through service to our community. Their knowledge, skills, and life experience are of immeasurable value to the organizations and to the lives of those they touch.
