Save Hunter’s Lake - 01
david@sceneonline.biz

We have a group of Hunter's Lake residents that are attempting to find ways to get the overgrown weeds removed from the Lake and the Channels to the lake.

There are two totally separate bodies of water that make up Hunter’s Lake. One is the “natural” lake and, the other is all the “man-made” residential channels around the lake. The majority of lake residents live on the channels, not the lake.

If you ask the Hernando Government Officials, they will tell you that they are presently planning on clearing weeds from Hunter’s Lake and, the public channel from the lake to the public parking lot located toward the North side of the lake sometime in 2027. What they don’t clearly say is that they are referring to only the “natural” lake and the public channel and, NONE of the “man made” residential channels.

Hernando county has never had a budget for or intention to remove the weeds in any of the residential “man made” channels around the lake, other than weed “spraying”. There is a big problem with weed “spraying”. When you kill the weeds they eventually sink to the bottom which only reduces the depth every time you use this method. The weeds must be physically removed, roots and all, or they will just grow back.

The Wrong Equipment.

Hernando county has purchased a weed removal vehicle for the purpose of clearing the weeds from the various lakes in the county. Unfortunately, this piece of equipment requires a minimum of 5 FEET of water depth to operate. When I checked out the water depth at the public ramp just last week, the depth was about 5 INCHES.

The low water level that we are experiencing at this time is not a good reason to put off any weed removal work. Today there are all kinds of water weed removal equipment, including “floating” bulldozers. Here is an example: Aquatic Weed Control, Weedoo Greenboat Inc: https://www.weedooboats.com

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions.
